Ocular Disease Screening
Cataracts
Symptoms
- Cloudy vision
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Halos around lights
- Frequent changes in glasses or contacts prescriptions
- Double vision in one eye
- Poor night vision
- Light sensitivity
- Seeing faded colors
A cataract is a vision impairment resulting from cloudiness of the lens in the eye that prevents light from being focused clearly on the retina. Cataracts typically form naturally with age.
Surgery is the only way to remove cataracts and restore vision. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. Some eye diseases or medical conditions can increase the risk of complications from cataract surgery, so it is important to discuss your medical history with your Ophthalmologist.
Life With Diabetes
If you have diabetes type 1 or 2, it may come as no surprise that this disease affects your whole body, even your eyes.
If your blood sugar levels are high, it can wreak havoc on your system, including the small and delicate blood vessels in your eyes.
Because the health of your eyes can change quickly, it’s critical that you keep up with the eye exam schedule your optometrist has created for you.Â
The best way to preserve your vision and monitor for early signs and symptoms of diabetic eye disease is with a diabetic eye exam. Our professional optometrists will assess your vision and eye health at every exam.
Glaucoma
Symptoms
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve, and the most common type is open-angle glaucoma. This type of glaucoma presents itself as patchy blind spots in your outermost (peripheral) vision.
Usually, you will not notice signs and symptoms of glaucoma until it is impacting your sight. Treatments are available to prevent its progression, but the vision loss caused by glaucoma is irreversible.
Acute angle-closure glaucoma is considered a medical emergency. If you experience the following symptoms, please speak to your optometrist right away or go to your local emergency clinic.
- Severe headache
- Eye pain
- Nausea & vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Halos around lights
- Eye redness
Myopia Control
As our eyes develop, sometimes they begin to take an elongated shape, resulting in light entering your eye too soon. When this happens, it causes your retina to not focus on images in the distance, which is called myopia.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, can continue to progress as the eye develops. Someone with myopia may require progressively stronger prescription lenses to correct their vision over time.
But what if we told you we could control the progression of myopia in young children?
That’s precisely one of our specialties. Talk to your optometrist about controlling myopia in your child today.
Macular Degeneration
Your macula is responsible for clear central vision. Macular degeneration affects this vision, causing it to appear blurry, dark, or distorted.
Macular degeneration comes in 2 forms:
Dry:
- Typically progresses slowly
- Early stages don’t present symptoms
- Progression can sometimes be slowed
Wet:
- More severe
- Typically causes faster vision loss
- Treatments sometimes available
